City of Torrington Economic Development Commission
Minutes April 3, 2012
  


Members Present:   Jim Thibault, Steve Michna, Dawn Gutowski, Bill Battle,
         Greg Mele,  

Members Absent:  George Noujaim, Nancy Sieller, TJ Zappulla, JoAnn Ryan,  

Also in attendance: Rose Ponte, and Tim Waldron

Commissioner Thibault called the meeting to order at 5:00pm

  • Open meeting to Public
Commissioner Thibault made the motion to open the meeting to the public and Commissioner Battle seconded the motion.  Motion carried
    
  • Approval of the Minutes
Commissioner Mele made the motion to approve minutes from March 6, 2012.  Commissioner Michna seconded the motion.  The motion carried.  

  • Rose Ponte updated the commission on several projects, mainly the City Canvas Initiative, Main Street Marketplace, and two new downtown businesses that have recently opened up.
  • Business Visitation Program. Tim Waldron revised the business visitation survey and the commissioners discuss each question and narrowed it down to seven questions. This program will continue to be revised with an expected start day in September.
  • Communication and Perception Improvement: In addition to Business Visitation Program, the commission will also be working on reviewing the current website and making recommendations and revisions. A subcommittee was formed; any interested commissioners should contact Jim if they are interested in serving in that committee. Written comments are welcomed from any commissioner who can’t serve but has suggestions.
  • New Business: Commissioner Battle had lunch with the principal of Oliver Wolcott School. Oliver Wolcott is working with several manufacturers and providing internship opportunities for their students. Commissioner Mele served on a panel to discuss job opportunities with THS students, and Commissioner Gutowski spent a day with St Francis school children discussing interview skills and business careers.
Having no further business the meeting was adjourned at 6:30 PM
